The question this site exists to answer: can you legally play a sweepstakes casino where you live? Here is the map, the exceptions, and the reasoning – updated July 2026.
The short answer
If you live in one of 46 states or the District of Columbia, yes – sweepstakes casinos operate lawfully under the promotional-sweepstakes framework, because entry is always available free and Gold Coins carry no cash value. If you live in Washington, Nevada, Idaho or California, no – operators exclude you at signup and will not process redemptions to those states.

What “legal” means in the other 46
Legality there rests on the operator following the model faithfully: never selling Sweeps Coins, always maintaining a free entry route, publishing sweepstakes rules, and verifying age and location. Part of our audit checks exactly this – an operator that cuts corners on the free-entry requirement is an operator inviting its own ban, and we will not list one.
Local wrinkles worth knowing
- Some operators voluntarily exclude further jurisdictions (New York and Florida come up occasionally) or set 21+ where the state default is 18+. Always read the eligible-states list at signup.
- You must be physically located in an eligible state while playing – residency alone is not enough, and geolocation checks enforce this.
- Prizes are taxable income. Operators may issue tax forms above certain thresholds; keep your own records regardless.
